Two Men Arrested in Greater Sudbury for Child Pornography During Ontario Initiative

Numerous charges have been laid across Ontario, in what Police are calling a snapshot of one month’s worth of work by Internet Child Exploitation Investigators that make up the Provincial Strategy to Protect Children from Sexual Abuse and Exploitation on the Internet.  

 

At a media conference yesterday, Wednesday, December 5, 2018, in Vaughan, the Ontario Provincial Police (O.P.P.) along with 26 Municipal Police Services announced the results of investigations during the month of November across the entire province of Ontario.

 

A total of 267 judicial authorizations were obtained, resulting in 551 charges against 122 persons, including 11 youth who cannot be identified under terms of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (Y.C.J.A.). Charges include: Sexual Assault, Sexual Interference, Invitation to Sexual Touching, Possession of Child Pornography, Make Available Child Pornography, Distribution of Child Pornography, Making Child Pornography, Accessing Child Pornography, Luring, and Making Sexually Explicit Material Available to a Child. 

 

In addition, 55 victims were identified during the investigations and referred to appropriate community-based resources for assistance.

 

The Greater Sudbury Police Service Cybercrime Unit executed four Search Warrants at separate residences in Greater Sudbury and arrested two men.  Two victims have been identified as a result of the investigations and they have been referred to appropriate victim services. 

 

The following individuals were arrested and charged with the following offences under the Criminal Code of Canada:

 

45-year old, John R. Taggart

  • Luring a Person Under 16 years – Sec 172.1(1)
  • Make Arrangement to Commit Sexual Offence Against a Child 172.2(1)(b)
  • Indecent Exposure to Person Under 16 years – Sec  173(2)
  • Make Explicit Material Available to a Person Under 16 years – Sec 171.1(1)(b)

 

A 17-year old, young man from Greater Sudbury who cannot be identified under conditions of the Y.C.J.A.

  • Luring a Person Under 18 years – 172.1(1)(a) x2
  • Luring a Person Under 16 years – Sec 172.1(1)(b) x3
  • Make Child Pornography – Sec 163.1(2) x2
  • Possession of Child Pornography – Sec 163.1(4) x3
  • Indecent Exposure to a Person Under 16 years – 173(2) x3

 

These investigations are on-going and additional charges are pending. 

 

The Greater Sudbury Police Service Cybercrime Unit also assisted North Bay Police Service in the execution of two Search Warrants leading to the arrest of two men in North Bay. 

 

The Greater Sudbury Police Service Cyber Crime Unit is part of the Ontario Provincial Strategy to Protect Children from Sexual Abuse and Exploitation on the Internet which has been made possible by a grant from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services and the Ministry of the Attorney General.
